Counselling and Hypnotherapy are talking therapies.
Hypnotherapy is a form of deep relaxation that takes you to a trance-like state. We all go into a trance several times a day - when you are fully engrossed in a tv programme or film and you are feeling the emotions of the characters, you are in a trance; when you are driving your car and can't remember part of the journey or if the traffic lights were on green, you are in a trance; when you day-dream you are in a trance. Trance is a natural state and nothing to fear.
By taking you into trance using relaxation techniques, your subconscious brain or mind is able to hear what is being said. The subconscious part of the brain or mind consists of approximately 90% of the brain. It is the part of the brain that stores all of your learning and experiences throughout your life (from birth) and creates your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Whilst most of these messages are positive and helpful, for example how to ride a bike, how to drive a car, some are negative and unhelpful for example, fear of spiders, being anxious or scared, reacting badly to something or someone, overeating, smoking.
Once you are in a trance like state I can give your subconscious mind or brain personalised messages to help to re-programme or re-wire your thought processes and behaviours into more positive and helpful ones, thereby helping you to overcome your anxiety, your phobias, your low self-esteem, lack of confidence, to stop overeating, to stop smoking for example. Your sub-conscious mind is so very receptive and can be re-programmed or re-wired to help you in positive ways only when your conscious brain (approximately 10%) is quiet and this happens during hypnosis.
(You can find commonly asked Q’s and A’s about hypnotherapy on this site.)
Hypnotherapy is typically delivered for up to an hour each time over a number of sessions with the exceptions of: smoking cessation which is either a single 2 hour session, or 4 x1 hour sessions and hypno-gastric band which is a total of 4 x1 hour sessions.
